The first time I witnessed the dancers of La Scala theatre rehearsing, I was hypnotized. In front of me, it was pure beauty: the bodies of the dancers moving on the notes was like witnessing pure high mountain water flowing over rocks, pure perfection. I tried to steal the beauty in still and moving images, and I felt tears coming to my eyes. Ballet is visceral, physical, sensual - a form of art that is brutally and beautifully human. It’s the perfect mix of sacred and profane. It transcends our nature and allows us to witness, for a brief moment, the divine nature in us. It’s a mystery, and It’s pure beauty.　 - Massimo Volta-

初めてスカラ座のダンサーたちのリハーサルを目にしたとき、私は魅了され、息をのみました。目の前に広がっていたのは純粋な美。音に合わせて舞う身体は、岩肌を流れる高山の清水のようで、完璧そのものでした。その美を写真や映像に刻み込もうとするうちに、思わず涙がこみ上げてきたのを覚えています。バレエは本能的で、肉体的で、官能的——人間の残酷さと美しさをあわせもつ芸術です。神聖と俗が交差するその瞬間は、私たちの内にある神性を垣間見せてくれる。バレエは神秘性に満ち、そして何よりも純粋な美なのです。
